Over 150 industry members have already backed the British Cleaning Council in lobbying government to put cleaning and hygiene at the heart of the national agenda as part of their ‘We Clean, We Care’ campaign.

It is important that we learn lessons from the pandemic and that as a country we are better prepared for any future public health emergencies that may arise and are more resilient to more common infections like flu etc and that is why more people need to back the campaign.

The APPG (All Party Parliamentary Group) inquiry’s report titled ‘Embedding Effective Hygiene For A Resilient UK’ due to be released before the end of the month will list recommendations to increase disease resilience in the UK.

The aim will be to build lessons on what was learnt during the peak of the pandemic, it also shows that cultural and behavioural change is needed nationwide regarding cleaning standards and that hygienic practices need to be widely adopted as normal daily routine.

Cleaning staff should be held in higher esteem for the vital work that they do too.

A new report by MP’s following the COVID pandemic calls for minimum cleaning standards to be introduced for venues.

The standards proposed include frequency guidelines and depth of cleaning and the key message of the report is that cleaning and hygiene is to be given top priority in the future in the hope that it will lead to a healthier, happier and safer public.

During the height of the pandemic, we saw a huge increase from businesses enquiring about increasing their existing cleaning program and requests for deep cleaning, anti-viral fogging and specialist cleaning however few of those businesses have maintained their heightened cleaning standards which makes you wonder if businesses truly see cleaning as the priority it should be.

It is proven that businesses which have high hygiene and cleaning standards are more successful, their staff are happier and healthier leading to low turnover and high attendance, their customers return time and time again and their good reviews lead to new business.

Cleaning Is Vital Work

Make 2022 the year that you see the true value of your cleaning operatives as despite government recognition of the sector over the past 18 months and personnel within the sector being skilled in their own right, the industry is still perceived as being low skilled!

Two years ago the British Cleaning Council raised concerns about the immigration system post Brexit to no avail. UK nationals have historically been harder to recruit within the industry and many workers have come from overseas which has ultimately now led to a recruitment crisis.

In addition to this despite lobbying and campaigns, the proposed Cleaning and Hygiene Operative Apprenticeship has still not been approved meaning there is no apprenticeship scheme for the sector.

COVID has also led to chronic staff shortages but an increase in demand for cleaning services.

Without cleaners, buildings will not be cleaned hygienically. Poor hygiene will turn customers away and bacterial contamination can cause serious illness.

Recent research shows that one of the ‘trends’ for this year is an increased visibility and frequency of cleaning clearly showing that cleaning is vital work so it’s imperative that a reputable cleaning company is appointed to ensure business premises are cleaned regularly to the highest possible standard and that cleaners are not ignored.
